I have been a practice nurse at North Street Medical center for 22 years and have seen the number of people diagnosed with diabetes grow within our practice. I now run a private diabetes clinic within North Street Medical Center. Having been dealing with patients newly diagnosed and those who have lived with diabetes for some time doing Enhanced Primary Care plans my interest in diabetes grew. Being aware of the need for good diabetes education for patients to manage the condition effectively I decided to become a diabetes educator to be able to assist and guide my patients on their journey. This has been a privilege, patients have allowed me to be a member of their health team sharing the ups and downs of their journey. “If nothing changes then nothing will change” is a catch phrase of mine, yet dealing with change is certainly challenging and having a team to assist those people living with diabetes with areas of change is vital, I love being an active participant in that team. My aim for people living with diabetes is to have them gain control of the disease, not to have the disease control them.
